Bunty Aur Babli

Bunty aur Babli - a fun bonanza !

B&B is a fun movie. Not seen something that is out and out fun without being gross for a long time. I will not compare it with the likes of Jane bhi do yaaron or with Chashmebadoor etc. But it surely deserves a place in the “Fun Movie” list.

What works for the movie?

1. The plot or rather the plotting of the protagonists is a big plus. I am sure if you dig around deeper some of these plots will have featured somewhere or the other. But the collection of plots by which B&B fool the sundry is hilarious. Look out for the Taj Mahal scene. It is a laugh riot

2. Music – I am sure lot of the movie critics will not agree with this. They would contend that the music (in fact any music in a non musical film) hinders the story telling. And I agree. But then Hindi films are mostly about the music and thus the fast paced numbers in the movie do add to the flavor. The Aishwarya item song is literally pushed in the story, but then one look at the song, Aish, and Amitabh dance and you tend to overlook this.

3. Casting – Abhishek deserves a place in this industry of his own. Away from the shadow of his highly talented parents. Rani – I never knew she can be some much fun. She has always been a good actress and there is no doubt about that. But I had my own inhibitions about how she will do the fun role. 10 out of 10 for her. Amitabh – no more to add. Look out for the titles at the end. All the Sundry people are actually good actors from the yester years (Lilliput, Ranjeet, Rajesh Babbar, Rajeshwari etc etc list is endless and interesting)

4. Presentation – This is a colorful film and it is presented in a very fresh fashion. The screen fills with color all through and that makes it interesting.

5. Acting – everyone in the film has done an amazing job. Abhishek has got an opportunity to show that he is a multi faceted and he pulls it off in style. Rani – she enjoys the movie as much as you do. Amitabh impresses in his cameo. Others do a wonderful job too.

What does not work?

1. Characters are not developed. The story does not develop the characters for Bunty and Babli and it relies on the fast pace of the movie to overlook this fact. Little explanation is provided why B&B take their B&B image as a full time profession suddenly on a Mumbai station?

2. The Climax. Once the protagonists are caught the movie just loses its grip on you and everything is unbelievable. Why does the inspector Dashrath Singh let them go? What is his line of thinking? Why does he approach them again? What does he offer them? The movie just ends abruptly in the end.

3. There may be a bit of murmur on glorifying the cons as successful. But I think it should not hamper the movie

Overall the movie is a Fun movie and surely watch it if you want a good laugh. The biggest gain for the movie is going to be for Abhishek, who I believe has had the goods for long time (since Refugee), but never could deliver the punch.
