Parineeta - A married woman?
Parineeta - A beautiful movie visually and emotionally except for ......... wait for the climax
Parineeta – The movie is visually very beautiful. The detailing of the old city of joy is great.
The Plot (obviously from Sarat da’s work) – Shekhar a self obsessed pampered son of a rich businessman, is in love with Lolita his neighbor. However his false male ego does not allow him to confess his love (or maybe he does not understand what his feelings for Lolita are).
There are times when he just takes her and her love for him as granted, until he realizes that Girish (another rich businessman) may take her away from him. These scenes are very well depicted - scene where he gets mad at her when she does not show for a music recording or where he expects her to inform him whenever she is going out.
Lolita who is in love with Shekhar too wants him to own his love and expects that he will claim her love rather than take it for granted. These too obviously in love characters go through a whirlwind of situations which challenge their love and their character. The movie is about the nature of their love and how they mature into responsible lovers and soul mates at the risk of (and sometimes actually) losing it all.
The other characters in the movie Girish the mature of the younger lot, Navin (shekhar’s father), etc add to the plot and make it interesting.
This work of Sarat Chattopadhyay (and Vidhoo and Sarkar’s adaptation) is different from the Devdas love story. The male protagonist is essentially flawed in both the stories. That actually is the beauty of these epics. No strong male protagonist. I love the works of Sarat da only for that. However the difference is in the approach of Devdas and Shekhar. Shekhar is too uptight to even relent for his love.
The script does make a few adjustments to cater to the 1960’s. However that is acceptable to me as I am not a purist.
The performances in the movie deserve a special reference - Saif Ali Khan has now decided that he should be counted amongst the "actors" and he surely makes a valid claim in this movie. His subdued and subtle performance without going over the top (except the climax) surely will win him the accolades.
Vidya Balan - the new girl in town gives a lovely performance too. But we have to wait for some more of her releases to determine whether she has "arrived". Her performance in this movie surely is good and noteworthy.
Sanjay Dutt has done a lovely little cameo in this movie though he looks a bit old for the role.
Everyone else in the movie throws in some good performances to ensure that the movie does not lose its grip over you.
The most enthralling parts of the movie are its look and its music. I cannot stop humming the songs from the movie. They are just so melodious and I hope that this will bring in a wave of melodies and keep the musicians away from the " drums alone" music for some time. I will write a something separately about the music.
Do watch the movie for its performances.
The only blot on this great piece of art is the climax. I just cannot imagine that the creative team of this movie who handled such a beautiful script with ease could not think of a better climax. I do not mean the theme of the climax but just the way it is depicted. it surely leaves a bad taste in the mouth after a sumptuous meal
